Are you hearing a lot about yoga these days? It’s a pretty hot topic. It’s the “right thing” to be doing, don’t you think? Truth be told, I think it IS the right thing but I also think the craze for yoga has, at times, reduced the quality of this very sacred practice. Statistics show that yoga-related injuries are on the rise. It is important to learn how to do it accurately – in a way that is practical, functional and sustainable. A focus on proper alignment is important. How do you find a yoga class if you are new to yoga or in a new town?
I am new to the beautiful city of Sarasota, having relocated from Northwest Iowa in November 2013. I know, I know….everybody from the North relocates to Florida this time of year, right? Well, this is different. I owned and operated a successful business that offered a wonderful healing arts combination of yoga and massage therapy, but I have also never lived anywhere else – ever. Moving here is a coming of age kind of thing. And since yoga and massage are extremely important to me and my lifestyle, I needed to find a place that fit for me. My first class with Lynn Burgess at Yoga from the Heart convinced me that Sarasota was the best fit. I have taught Beginner’s Yoga for about four years and have been a passionate student for nearly eight years. Yoga is a transformational practice. The alignment-based style of yoga that is taught at Yoga from the Heart is a practice greatly influenced the American yoga master, Rodney Yee. It is high quality yoga. What I often say to new students is this: if you are not transformed by your yoga class experience, find a new teacher, find a new class….because this is a practice that can awaken you to a sense of wholeness and well-being that you may never have known possible. Why settle for less?
Yoga from the Heart offers a class opportunity 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, at various times of the day. There is no reason not to try it. All of the teachers at the studio, myself included, really enjoy sharing the benefits that yoga offers: strength, flexibility and balance. The surprise bonus is the sense of wholeness and peace that yoga, by its very definition, provides.
